Retro Rewind Video Store Simulator
Management Guide
Master store management from day one to late game: daily workflow, staff and economy control, computer and catalog use, unlock and expansion timing, plus practical planning for events and seasonal demand spikes.
Quick Navigation
Quick Start & Daily Workflow
If you are new, keep your routine simple. Build a stable daily loop first, then scale your store once cash flow and shelf control feel consistent.
First-Day Priorities
- Open with clean shelves and enough empty space for returns.
- Use flyers early to seed new customers while the street is busy.
- Avoid overbuying niche stock before your core genres move reliably.
- Keep one clear area for incoming returns so nothing gets lost in traffic.
Returns, Counter & Phone Basics
- Check return notifications quickly to prevent queue buildup.
- Use recommendations to move slow inventory and clear reserved edge cases.
- Treat reservations as priority requests; they protect customer flow.
- Phone calls can create immediate tasks, so answer when you are near the counter.
End-of-Day Focus
- Re-sort high-demand genres first so morning traffic is smooth.
- Refill concession and machine stations before you close, not after a rush starts.
- Review what actually rented today, then plan tomorrow's restock from that data.
Using the Computer & Black Market
The computer is your control center. Learn what each tab does, then use manual ordering only when it saves time or protects shelf consistency.
Core Tabs
- New: Time-sensitive releases and launch windows.
- Market: Regular purchasing and general inventory fill.
- Data: Direct lookup and precise ordering.
- Black Market: Opportunistic stock, useful for variety and gap-filling.
When SKU Ordering Is Worth It
- Replace a broken or missing tape without waiting for random market rotation.
- Fill a specific genre lane before weekend or seasonal demand spikes.
- Standardize shelves after mixed placement chaos from rush hours.
For exact codes, use the dedicated SKU Codes page and paste directly into your computer ordering flow.
Catalog, Unlocks & Expansion Order
Buy in layers. Capacity, customer comfort, and service speed should rise together, otherwise one bottleneck cancels your new spending.
Catalog Priorities at a Glance
| Group | Primary Benefit | Priority |
|---|---|---|
| Shelves | Capacity and cleaner genre routing | Buy first |
| Decorations | Appeal and foot-traffic support | Buy steadily |
| Equipment | Side revenue and request coverage | Medium |
| Stations | Queue flow and request reliability | When demand appears |
Practical Expansion Order
- Expand shelf space before heavy decoration spending.
- Add decoration consistently so traffic growth matches capacity.
- Unlock one service stream at a time and verify it pays for itself.
- Pause expansion when routing is messy, then fix layout first.
Tasks, Seasons & Event Planning
Tasks help with progression, but planning inventory ahead of demand windows is what protects daily profit consistency.
How to Use Tasks
- Most tasks complete naturally while handling checkout, returns, and requests.
- Use task prompts as diagnostics for weak spots in your routine.
- Do not force every task immediately if it hurts your cash flow loop.
Seasonal Demand Notes
- Horror: Pre-fill before spooky demand periods.
- Sci-Fi: Keep deeper variety to avoid fast stockouts.
- Drama: Maintain a stable baseline between spikes.
- Xmas: Buy early and keep backup copies before peak days.
Advanced Notes: Custom Movies & Dev Room
Use With Caution
- Custom movies are an advanced feature; stabilize your core store loop first.
- The dev room is typically a late-game element and can affect achievements.
- If progression integrity matters to you, keep a backup save before testing advanced features.
馃鈥嶐煉?Employees: Hiring, Traits & Troubleshooting
Staff members are essential for a growing store, but they are also the source of the most common complaints. From asking for crazy raises to falling asleep on the job, here is how to manage your team effectively.
馃専 The Secret: Employee Traits
Stop hiring random people! Always check their specific traits before hiring:
- Loyal: The best trait. They have a 0% chance of quitting and will never ask for a raise.
- Strong Immune System: They will rarely (or never) ask for sick days.
- Thick Skinned: You can yell at them to "work faster" repeatedly without them complaining or quitting.
- Complaint Handler: Essential for checkout staff to deal with angry customers and late fees.
馃洃 Common Misconceptions
"Is my employee stealing from me?"
No. If you see a positive transaction (+$20) immediately followed by a negative one (-$16), it's just the employee handing change back to the customer. There is no stealing mechanic.
"Why do they ruin my shelf organization?"
Employees try to match genres to labels. However, if the correct genre shelf is full, they will place the tape in any empty space available, turning that shelf into a "Mixed" shelf. Keep your inventory balanced!
鈿狅笍 Bugs & Daily Annoyances
- Bug: Employee Getting Stuck / Freezing: As of recent updates, employees may randomly stand still and ignore reassignments. The Fix: Resetting their job in the book often fails. The only reliable workaround is to Save and Restart the game.
- Constant Sick Days & Quitting on Day 1: This is an RNG balancing issue currently in the game. Denying a sick day or raise often leads to instant quitting. Tip: If an employee lacks the "Loyal" or "Strong Immune" traits, fire them and wait for a better applicant.
- Sleeping on the Job: Staff will occasionally fall asleep standing up. You must empty your hands (drop tapes) to interact and wake them up.
馃挵 Economy, Pricing & Special Stock
Stuck making the same $250 a day? Wondering what to do with holographic tapes? Here is the breakdown of the hidden economic mechanics in Retro Rewind.
馃殌 Breaking the $300/Day Plateau
Many players feel their income stops growing around rank 10. Here is how to fix it:
- Decorations Matter: Store expansions alone do NOT bring more customers. You must buy Decorations to increase the store's "Appeal" and drive foot traffic.
- Arcade Machines: Buy them! Two arcade machines can generate nearly $100 a day in pure passive income.
- Flyers vs. Regulars: Handing out flyers brings in "New" customers who usually only rent 1 tape. "Existing" loyal customers will rent 3-4 tapes at a time.
- The Profit Illusion: The end-of-day profit screen already deducts your employees' wages. You are making more money than you think!
馃摷 Holo, Limited & "Old" Tapes
- Holo & Limited Editions: These tapes rent for $1 extra (e.g., $8 instead of $7). They also sell for much higher in the Clearance Bin (50% of their boosted market value).
- Secret Achievement: If you place 4 Holographic tapes into a 'Movie Display' (from the Decorations tab), you unlock a hidden achievement!
- Review Scores Don't Matter: Customers actively want "Bad Critic" movies (especially Horror and Adult genres). Stock everything!
- The "Old" Tag: Movies with the "Old" trait will have their rental fee permanently reduced by $0.50.
馃毃 Customers Not Paying & Missing Tapes
- Customers refusing to pay late fees: If a customer gets mad, throws the tape on the floor, and leaves without paying, there is nothing you can do. You cannot call the cops. It's just a retail simulation feature. Just pick up the tape and move on.
- BUG: New Releases NEVER returning: If your New Releases are rented out and literally never come back, you are playing on a broken Demo Save File. The devs highly recommend uninstalling the demo and starting a completely new game, or your save will be permanently bugged.
馃彫 Store Operations & Hidden Mechanics
The daily grind of running a video store comes with its own set of weird quirks and bugs. Here is how to handle the most confusing situations.
馃毃 WARNING: The "Display Case" Trap
Do you put your rare Holographic movies in the decorative Display Case? Stop immediately!
Due to a current game mechanic, customers can and will rent movies straight out of the display cases, and they might break them! If you are collecting Holo tapes, keep them hidden in the back room or on a table where customers cannot reach them until this is patched.
馃敀 How to Fix "Stuck" Reservations
If a customer storms out due to a late fee, their reserved tape might get permanently stuck with the "Reserved" tag. To fix this waste of shelf space:
- The Best Fix: Wait for a customer to ask for a "Recommendation" of that genre. Hand them the stuck tape! When they return it, the reservation is cleared.
- The Nuke Option: Put it in the bargain bin to sell it, then buy a fresh copy using its SKU code on the computer.
馃摷 Quick Operational Quirks
- Found a random tape on the ground outside? This happens if you Save & Quit the game while a customer is actively returning a video. The NPC despawns, but the tape drops at your spawn point. Free inventory!
- Do "Mixed" shelves hurt sales? No. Customers do not care if your shelves are a mess; they will still find and rent the movies. Sorting by genre is purely to help YOU find tapes faster when fulfilling manual requests.
Retro Rewind Video Store Simulator Management Guide FAQ
How do I fix employees getting stuck in Retro Rewind Video Store Simulator?
If your employee freezes or stops working, reassigning their job in the book usually won't work. The only reliable fix right now is to save your game and restart.
Is my employee stealing money from the register?
No, employees do not steal. If you see a negative deduction immediately after a positive sale, it is simply the employee handing change back to the customer.
How do I make more than $300 a day in Retro Rewind?
Store expansions alone don't increase foot traffic. You must buy Decorations to increase your store's appeal. Also, consider buying Arcade Machines, as two machines can generate around $100 in passive income daily.
Why do employees put the wrong genres on my shelves?
Employees will try to match genres, but if the correct shelf is full, they will place the tape in any available empty spot, turning it into a Mixed shelf. Ensure you have enough shelf space for each genre.
Do holographic movies earn more money?
Yes, Holo and Limited Edition tapes rent for an extra $1. However, do NOT put them in the Display Case, as customers can currently rent them directly from the case and potentially break them.
